Wizards winners 2014

Asia and Ireland have dominated the 2014 Wizards of Whisky World Whisky Awards, with both regions having a fierce three way internal fight for honours. They won nearly half all the golds awarded this year between them.

And in a sure sign of the rapidly evolving New World whisky category, The Wizards produced a large number of new winners, with only one distiller of the year from 2013 retaining its crown.

In Asia last year’s winners Amrut and new boys John Distillery, both from India, both picked up three golds, but John Distillery just took top honours on points in the tightest of battles. So strong was performance of both distilleries that they took first and second place in the overall World Distiller of the Year category.

But they didn’t manage to pick up the Asian Whisky of the Year. Remarkably Taiwan’s Kavalan scored highest for its Solist Bourbon Cask Ex Bourbon Cask Cask Strength Whisky. But Kavalan was pipped by three points to the overall World Whisky of the Year 2014 by Balcones for its Texas Single Malt Special Reserve.

In Ireland Irish Distillers repeated its success of last year and won five golds and three silvers, but it was pipped to the Irish Distiller of The Year by Teeling, whose high scoring gold whiskeys gave them
a slightly better average score overall. Bushmills also put in a very strong performance.

The full results are as follows:

For the record: These awards were made after three separate judging events, each with seven to 12 judges. The whiskies were tasted totally blind and the lowest score for each whisky was eliminated. Although I tasted the whiskies, my scores were not taken in to consideration. None of the judges represented or were involved with any of the whiskies they were tasting.
